About Beth Berman
Beth Berman has been a lifelong self-taught artist, drawing since a child. She moved into pen and ink, oils and acrylics followed by a semester at the University of Rome, Italy, in 1966. Her art was put on hold while raising her son. After moving to Maine in 1979, she taught basket weaving, chair caning and fly tying in adult education classes.
In 1993, she went back
to college and minored in art, taking photography, pottery, drawing and
aesthetics. In 1999, after receiving her BS and MS in Environmental Science and
Policy, she began exploring fiber art in all its permutations. She and a few
friends started an international Fiber Art blog called “And Then We Set It On Fire”,
which still exists, featuring scores of entries about all manner of Fiber Art
related techniques by artist from all over the world. During this time
she instituted The Maine Event, an annual convergence of fiber artists from New
England. These events led to annual workshops teaching dyeing, silk screening
and a plethora of techniques for adding color to cloth and paper. Over a
decade, her desire to revisit paint has resurfaced; specifically painting in
oil. These paintings are a record of her journey in this medium which can see
be seen at her gallery “The Side Street Gallery” in the beautiful coastal town
of Searsport, Maine.
